John Moores. Courtesy of the Liverpool Daily Echo & Post. The Moss herd of pedigree Aberdeen-Angus is owned by John & Jane Moores, who are delighted to welcome another Aberdeen-Angus enthusiast, their son Kevin to the team. The Moss herd was founded in the early 60's and is based in Formby, about 16 miles north of Liverpool, and within a few miles of the Irish Sea. The cattle occupy about 151 ha, 372 acres of poor, mostly sandy land. Poor land makes for rigorous selection: only cattle that consistently perform above breed average may stay in the herd. Moss cattle therefore have the potential to do even better on good land and have bred very well for their new owners across the country and abroad.

What better endorsement is there than our own Perth Hall of Fame: This includes 13 bulls who between them produced 3 Supreme, 3 Reserve Supreme, 3 Senior and 1 Reserve Senior, 4 Intermediate and 2 Reserve Intermediate, 1 Junior and 1 Reserve Junior champion. Moss cattle as foundation stock have spread the Aberdeen-Angus message into Germany and Hungary. All have contributed to making the Moss one of the most successful herds in England.

We would like to thank all our customers, past and present for purchasing Moss Cattle and wish them every success and good fortune.

Visitors to the herd are always welcome. We are happy to advise on stock, both for pedigree and commercial breeding. Moss cattle are represented in over 80 herds across the country and we are proud to report that most of our customers come back to us for further purchases.

Brief history of stock bulls

John Moores, jointly with Eastfield, was the first to introduce Canadian bulls into the U.K. and among the first to bring in bulls, and later embryos, from the States.

Moss policy has been to buy either proven sires or the very best possible young sires and to use them lightly until their breeding quality could be assessed. The good ones (rarely more than one in three) were then used heavily. Many of the stock bulls were owned in partnership with other top herds. Our early association with Eastfield continues, with previous joint ownership of Eastfield Falcon Z042, from whom we have retained many offspring in our herd. MVF Stockman 15K was also a joint ownership with Nightingale, with whom we also have a long term business relationship.

Two of the most influential sires used in the herd turned out to be Perryville Roscoe and Scotch Cap (A.I) - sires to 19 Moss champions at Perth and Carlisle. Perryville Roscoe (jointly owned with Messrs McGregor and Robertson) was bought as a proven bull from Canada, where he had sired many champions. Introduced in 1984, Roscoe an excellent breeder of both bulls and females, probably had the biggest influence in the herd with prizes and prices to prove it. Widely used as an A.I. sire, his influence extends beyond this farm, with 962 calves registered against his name, making him one of the most popular sires of modern times.

The American influence is illustrated by, amongst other stock bulls; Edinburgh of the Moss. Edinburgh of the Moss, sire Scotch Cap, Dam GT Evergreen - imported as an embryo. Edinburgh has produced daughters that have sold to 4,000 gns and bulls to 7,500 gns. A full brother to Edinburgh, Elgar of the Moss, has made his name in John Elliot's Rawburn herd. A son, Bronco of the Moss, was sold as stock sire to Dinar Estate. These bulls went on to produce calves with top EBV's for beef value and muscling score. A Bronco son, Fordel Eisenhower Y423, won Reserve Senior Champion at Perth 2001 and sold for 6,500 gns as stud-sire to MMB in Northern Ireland.

Famous A.I. Sires used in the herd include Rito 2100 GDR; QAS Traveler, Rambo 465, Double A Willie Boy and Scotch Cap, one of the most influential sires in the breed. We are currently using two Canadian A.I. sires. Cudlobe Yellowstone 18M and Youngdale Bond 61M. We are very pleased with the calves from these two young bulls, the Bond calves in particular are very thick and have strong powerful legs.
